Carolyn A. Borcher, 82, of Sterling, Nebraska, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday night, March 27, 2026. Born September 11, 1943, in Tecumseh to Leonard J. W. and Dorothea (Stake) Steiner, Carolyn lived a life marked by devotion to family, faith, and community service. She graduated from Lewiston High School in 1961 and continued her education at C.E. School of Commerce in Omaha. On September 18, 1965, she married Stanley Borcher at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burchard, and together they built a life rooted in love, hard work, and faith, raising five children.
Carolyn’s professional life included work at the state capital and in administration, medical records, and scheduling at several area nursing homes. Yet her most cherished role was that of farmwife and mother, where she poured her energy into nurturing her family and supporting her husband in their shared life on the farm.
She was deeply involved in her community, serving as church pianist, Sunday School Superintendent, and 4‑H leader. Her faith was central to her life, first as a member of Sterling United Methodist Church until its closing, and later at Hopewell United Methodist Church.
Her commitment to service extended far beyond her family and church. Carolyn was a former member of the Johnson County Hospital Board and County Extension Club, where she worked to strengthen local resources and support rural families. For over 30 years, she volunteered with the Sterling Rescue Squad, offering her time and compassion to those in need. Her dedication to helping others reflected her selfless nature and her belief in the importance of community care.
Carolyn is survived by her children, Glenda (Ed) Wallpe, Carrie (Steve) Vyhlidal, Patricia (Steve) Shewmaker, Ken (Marlow) Borcher, and Dean (Ashley) Borcher; grandchildren Kalin and Miles Wallpe, James and Michael Vyhlidal, Molly Shewmaker, and Garrett Lorenzo; her brother Leonard W. Steiner; and many in‑laws, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Borcher, who passed away on June 2, 2024; her parents, Leonard and Dorothea Steiner; her sister, Arleen (Clarence) Hippen; her parents‑in‑law, Marvin and Glenda Borcher; and in‑laws Gerald Hartman and Gary Neumann. Her family remembers her as a source of strength, wisdom, and unconditional love.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, April 24, 2026, at the Sterling Community Center with Pastor Ken Tubbesing officiating. Interment will follow at Sterling Cemetery. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 A.M. prior to the funeral. The body will lie in state at Zink‑Fox Funeral Home on Thursday, April 23, from noon until 8:00 P.M., with the family greeting relatives and friends from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the family’s choice, honoring Carolyn’s lifelong devotion to service and community.
