The community is mourning the passing of Thomas “Tom” Irving Maltbey, who took his last breath on May 7, 2026, with his loving wife and daughters by his side. His departure marks the end of a remarkable journey defined by resilience, devotion, and quiet strength. Tom’s life was a testament to courage in the face of challenges and unwavering love for his family.
Thirty‑seven years ago, Tom received the extraordinary gift of a kidney from his brother, Tim—a gift that gave him decades more to share with those he loved most. Throughout his life, Tom faced health challenges with determination and grace, never allowing them to diminish his spirit. His perseverance and will to fight for his health reflected his deep desire to remain present for his family, who were always his greatest priority.
Tom was a man of humility, patience, and steadfast devotion. Though not one to speak many words, when he did, they carried honesty and meaning. His family remembers him as their rock—steady, dependable, and loving in ways that showed through his actions every single day. His advice, humor, and quiet strength shaped the lives of those around him, leaving a legacy of wisdom and love.
Beyond his family life, Tom’s accomplishments and passions reflected his character. He was the first All‑State football player at Wausau West High School, where he also met Sharon, the love of his life, at just 16 years old. Together, they built a beautiful life and shared 50 years of marriage.
Tom worked for Greenheck Fan for more than 30 years before retiring in 2016, and he found joy in the outdoors, hunting, fishing, riding his Harley, and coaching softball. His greatest joy, however, was being a grandfather, proudly supporting his five grandchildren in all their activities.
Tom will be remembered for his strength, loyalty, quiet humor, and steady love. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sharon; his daughters Jamie (Jason) Polley and Kendra (Danny) VanSlyke; his grandchildren Wes and Samantha Polley, and Cole, Will, and Allie VanSlyke; his siblings and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Victor Maltbey, and several beloved siblings and in‑laws. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 15, 2026, at Covenant Community Presbyterian Church in Schofield, Wisconsin, where family and friends will gather to honor his extraordinary life. May his memory continue to inspire love, resilience, and devotion in all who knew him.
