Gretchen Ann Klippenstein, 93, of Beatrice, Nebraska, passed away on March 28, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and devotion that will be cherished by her family and community. Born June 24, 1932, in Pierce, Nebraska, to Alfred and Blanche (Larson) Calvert, Gretchen lived a life marked by resilience, service, and joy.
She graduated from Friend High School in 1950 and pursued higher education at Nebraska Wesleyan University, where she was a member of Willard Sorority. She later transferred to Lincoln General Hospital Nursing School and ultimately graduated from the University of Nebraska Lincoln Teacher’s College in August 1954.
Gretchen met her husband, John “Jack” Klippenstein, while attending Friend High School, and their love story blossomed into a marriage that lasted 71 years. They were married on June 18, 1954, in Lincoln, Nebraska, and together built a life rooted in faith, family, and community.
Their journey took them from Illinois to Friend, Nebraska, and eventually to Beatrice in 1963, where they raised their three daughters—Ann, Lori, and Janice. Gretchen devoted herself to her family, spending fourteen years at home nurturing her children before returning to the classroom to teach fourth grade at Cedar School in Beatrice, where she served for twenty‑four years until her retirement.
Her passions extended beyond teaching. Gretchen delighted in music, games of dominoes, and cheering on her beloved Husker volleyball, football, and basketball teams, as well as professional tennis. She enjoyed simple pleasures—sitting with friends, sharing laughter, and savoring time with loved ones. A founding member of Christ Community Church, Gretchen’s faith was central to her life, guiding her actions and inspiring those around her.
She is survived by her husband, Jack; daughters Ann (Lance) Carlson, Lori (Hon. James) Stecker, and Janice (Dr. Randel) Swanson; grandchildren Mark Carlson (friend Ashley Lowry), Steven (Maggie) Carlson, Daniel Stecker, Dr. Gregory (Veronica) Stecker, Dr. Jenna (Dr. Christian) Berg, Dr. Seth (Kara) Swanson, and Hannah (Kris) Kooistra; and great‑grandchildren Rocco and Marlowe Carlson, Axel and Elena Berg, Eliza, Oliver, Marigold, and Poppy Swanson, and Dallas, Cash, and Tripp Kooistra.
She is also survived by sisters‑in‑law Nancy Calvert and Linda Klippenstein, along with cousins, nieces, and nephews. Gretchen was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Alfred and his wife Yvonne, her brother Dr. Thomas Calvert, her brother‑in‑law Gerald Klippenstein, and her sister‑in‑law and brother‑in‑law JoAnn and Norman Roll.
A celebration of Gretchen’s life will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Christ Community Church with Pastor Dan Martin officiating. A family prayer service will precede at 10:45 A.M. at the church. Private burial will take place at Evergreen Home Cemetery of Beatrice. Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 1, from noon until 8:00 P.M., with the family greeting relatives and friends from 5:30 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to Christ Community Church of Beatrice, honoring Gretchen’s lifelong devotion to her faith and community.
