Mikel “Mike” Lee Balderson, 66, passed away on February 26, 2026, after a courageous three‑year battle with cancer. Born on August 7, 1959, in Sacramento, California, to Norman and Darlene Balderson, Mike spent his childhood in Diller and Odell, Nebraska, where he formed lifelong friendships and developed the grounded, straightforward outlook that would define him. A 1977 graduate of Diller High School, he carried with him a strong work ethic, a deep sense of loyalty, and a genuine appreciation for the people around him.
Mike dedicated his career to public service, working for the State of Nebraska in the field of safety and security. His time with the Nebraska State Patrol and the Beatrice State Developmental Center earned him the respect of colleagues who admired his diligence, integrity, and unwavering commitment to doing what was right.
Beyond his professional life, Mike devoted many years to coaching baseball and football during his son Bryce’s childhood. His steady guidance, patience, and encouragement shaped not only his son’s life but also the lives of many young athletes who looked up to him.
On August 27, 1983, Mike married Rhonda Rae Landenberger, beginning a partnership built on love, humor, and mutual support. He was a proud father to Bryce Mikel Balderson, and later, a devoted grandfather to Charlotte Mae and Amilia Mae, who brought him immense joy. Mike’s family was the center of his world, and he cherished every moment spent with them—whether sharing stories, offering advice, or simply enjoying the comfort of being together.
Mike found happiness in the simple pleasures that reflected his personality and passions. He loved riding motorcycles, fishing, and golfing, embracing the freedom and peace these activities brought him. A devoted Tennessee Volunteers fan, he rarely missed a chance to cheer on his team. Known for his familiar phrase, “It is what it is,” Mike approached life with honesty, acceptance, and a calm resilience. He never met a stranger, and those who knew him couldn’t help but like him. His warmth, humor, and easygoing nature made him someone people naturally gravitated toward.
Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Darlene Balderson; his brother‑in‑law, Robert Bybee; his niece, Krystine Bybee; and his father‑in‑law, Kenneth Ray Landenberger. He is survived by his wife, Rhonda; his son, Bryce; his grandchildren, Charlotte Mae and Amilia Mae; his father, Norman Balderson; his mother‑in‑law, Judy Landenberger; and the families of Randy Balderson, Kathleen Bybee, Brenda Engelman, Mike Landenberger, Stephanie Scheele, Brett Landenberger, and Tracey Landenberger, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In accordance with Mike’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. Memorials and condolences may be sent to Fox Funeral Home in Beatrice, Nebraska. His family and friends will forever remember his kindness, his humor, and the steady, genuine presence he brought into their lives.
